Marketing for Creators and Influencers

Unit Opener

Unit 1: The Creator’s World

Most marketing textbooks are written from the perspective of a brand manager with a budget. This book is written for your side of the screen, for a creator or influencer, current or future, whose product is yourself and your work. That changes what marketing means, and it changes what you need to know first.

The four chapters of Unit 1 form one arc:

The unit is designed around two patterns to help you learn. First, the reading asks you to retrieve, not just recognize. Each chapter pauses for knowledge checks, and the unit ends with a cumulative review that reaches back to the beginning, because pulling an idea out of memory is what fixes it there. Answer before you look back. Being wrong first is part of the mechanism. Second, the unit’s frameworks are not single-use. The assessment framework returns in every unit review, the value proposition’s three questions grow into your niche and brand in Unit 2, the discovery cycle comes back every time you face an untested plan, and the platform incentive audit returns whenever a platform’s terms shape a decision. What you are learning in this unit is the vocabulary for the rest of the course.

The unit also starts the semester project. By the unit review you will have chosen the creator identity or creative venture you will develop, drafted its value proposition, tested that draft in real conversations, and audited the venture’s intended platform. Those pieces assemble into Milestone 1, the first of six steps that end in a complete personal marketing plan. None of it requires an existing audience, a public account, or any spending. It only requires the willingness to treat something you care about as a venture worth designing.
